This half-term we will be exploring and learning about the Little Red Hen following the talk for writing sequence.
MODEL TEXT: The Little Red Hen
We use talk because: “You can’t write it unless you can say it.”
The Little Red Hen
Once upon a time there was a little red hen who lived on a farm. Early one morning she found some corn. ‘Who will help me plant the corn?’ said the little red hen. ‘Not I,’ said the lazy dog. ‘Not I,’ said the sleepy cat. ‘Not I,’ said the noisy duck.
‘Who will help me water the corn?’ said the little red hen. ‘Not I,’ said the lazy dog. ‘Not I,’ said the sleepy cat. ‘Not I,’ said the noisy duck
‘Who will help me cut the corn?’ said the little red hen. ‘Not I,’ said the lazy dog. ‘Not I,’ said the sleepy cat. ‘Not I,’ said the noisy duck.
‘Who will help me carry the corn?’ said the little red hen. ‘Not I,’ said the lazy dog. ‘Not I,’ said the sleepy cat. ‘Not I,’ said the noisy duck.
‘Who will help me make the bread?’ said the little red hen. ‘Not I,’ said the lazy dog. ‘Not I,’ said the sleepy cat. ‘Not I,’ said the noisy duck.
‘Who will help me bake the bread?’ said the little red hen. ‘Not I,’ said the lazy dog. ‘Not I,’ said the sleepy cat. ‘Not I,’ said the noisy duck
‘Who will help me eat the bread?’ said the little red hen. ‘I will,’ said the lazy dog. ‘I will,’ said the sleepy cat. ‘I will,’ said the noisy duck. ‘Oh no you won’t,’ said the little red hen. ‘I’ll eat it myself’ and so she did.

Writing speech and exploring feelings
We talked about how the Little Red Hen might have felt when her friends did not want to help her. We also talkked about how we would feel if our friends did not want to help us at school.

Where does bread come from?
We explored how seeds grow into wheat and how flour made from the wheat is turned into bread.

Aunty Elena brought in her mill (blender!) to show us how wheat gets turned into flour! We used words to describe what the wheat and flour felt like and enjoyed playing and writing in the flour!

We wanted to help the Little Red Hen make and bake the bread and so we did. First, we learnt a song about baking bread. Next, we listened to and followed instructions carefully. Kneading was a challenge but we persevered! The best part was when we got to taste the bread. Yummy!
