Healthy Living Week – Monday 30th June to Friday 4th July 2014
Mrs Swain, our Science Co-ordinator, has organised a Healthy Living Week for the school. The week will start off with an assembly on Monday 30th June at 9am. I have invited Karen Hubbard to lead out in the assembly and thank Richard Poulton and Enoch Kanagaraj for making this recommendation and putting us in touch.
Karen studied nutrition and dietetics at Surrey University, gaining a BSC honours. She has been working as a dietician for 20 years. During this time, she has been engaged in research at the UCL and most recently, has been involved in the Chartered Nutrition Group’s Trim Tots Study. Karen has also spent 15 years in mental health and nine years as a ‘Meals on Wheels’ dietician. I have asked Karen if she would touch on some topics such as foods that aid concentration, what currently constitutes a healthy diet, fast foods, healthy lunch boxes etc… Karen will also be showing us how to grow alfalfa sprouts (highly nutritious) and if you would like your child to try this, please send him/her in with a plastic container.
Parents/friends, you are invited to join us for this assembly and there may also be an opportunity for you to ask questions, time-permitting.
HSA – Stanborough Fete - Sunday 6th July 2014 – 11am-2pm
The fete is not only an event that we hope will bring the community together and be enjoyed by all who attend, but it is also an opportunity to raise funds to purchase iPads for the classrooms. As such, every class has been assigned a stall to run. Please speak with the class teacher and let her know when you can help on the day.
Veronica has invested much time in preparing the poster, cards and banners and I am sure you will agree that they look great. Bundles of the cards are available in the foyer, for distribution. Please assist in promoting the fete by distributing the cards. The exercise and Vitamin D will be an added bonus! Thank you all.
Year Five parents are asked to ensure that they read the South West Herts Consortium Testing information sent home on the 14th May and again on 21st May 2014. Please note that registration closes on Friday 27th June 2014.
As per the detailed letter sent out on Monday (Reception to Year 5), I trust that many of you will have taken up the opportunity to sign up to this educational programme, which will be very beneficial to the pupils’ development in maths and spelling.
Year Three and Four pupils had a full day of physical activity at Phasel’s Woods on Wednesday 18th June. This was indeed an opportunity to develop resilience and stamina, as the pupils challenged themselves to have a go at and complete the various activities. Hats off to Mrs Velu, who also joined in with every activity!
Year one and two pupils also enjoyed an outdoor trip. They went to Whipsnade Zoo on Tuesday 17th June. The small groups provided many opportunities for interaction and learning.
Please note that photograph orders and payments must be returned to the office by tomorrow, Friday 27th June 2014.
Please be reminded that next week is the last week for clubs.
We are thankful to Mrs Desai for the donation of books given to the school.
Year Six End of Year Celebrations
On Tuesday 8th July (during the school day) the Year Six leavers will be going bowling followed by a meal at Frankie and Benny’s for their end of year treat. They will also receive autograph books for collecting special messages and contact details of those they would like to keep in touch with. During their last week, they may also get their PE T-Shirts signed (as they bear the school logo and make a good memento). Our leavers will also feature in our end of year assembly on Wednesday 9th July and we hope to see you all there.
End of Year Celebration Assembly
This will take place on Wednesday 9th July at 10.30am. It provides an opportunity for us to congratulate the pupils on their various achievements during the school year. All are welcome to attend. The assembly, and indeed the school year, will conclude on Wednesday at 12 noon. We kindly request that the children are collected promptly.
Please be advised of the staffing position for 2014-15:
Nursery will remain the same. The Reception Class will be taught by Mrs Steyn, who is returning from maternity leave. We look forward to welcoming her back. Mrs Rees will teach Year 1. Mrs St Cyr will teach Year 2. Mrs Horwood will teach Year 3. Mrs Swain will go up with the Year 3 class (for continuity). Mrs Adewole will teach Year 5 and Mrs Madden will teach Year 6. A lot of thought has gone into the decision-making and as always, the expectation is that we will all continue to give of our best, to ensure that the children get the education they deserve.
Sadly, we will be saying goodbye to Mrs Haacke, who provided maternity cover and was based in the Year One Class. We are very appreciative of the time and effort that Mrs Haacke put into the teaching of the class. She has been a significant member of the team, well appreciated by her colleagues and she will be missed.
This will take place on Thursday 4th September 2014 at 7pm. Please note that school closes at the normal time of 3.30/3.35pm on that day. The Early Years and Infant parents will meet the respective teachers in the classrooms at 7pm. This will be followed by a meeting in the hall at 7.30pm. (The Government has introduced a new curriculum which comes into effect in September 2014 and this will be an opportunity for us to update you on the changes.) At 8pm, the Junior parents (Y3-6) will have the opportunity to meet their class teachers in the various classrooms. The evening should conclude by 8.30pm. We hope that everyone will be able to attend.
Secondary Transfer Meeting
This will take place on Friday 5th September 2014 at 12.30 in the Year 6 classroom. The meeting is for Year 6 parents, but we recommend that Year 5 parents also attend in preparation for moving on to Secondary School.
Autumn Term 2014
School resumes on Tuesday 2nd September 2014. (Monday is an INSET Day.)
Regards and blessings
Mrs K Hanson
