11 th March 2010

Dear Parents

The children had fun dressing up on World Book Day and trying to guess the different characters in assembly. The teachers also took part and we particularly appreciated Mr Steyn’s Samson character (which was not to be confused with that of Ozzy Osborne’s.) The day was spent in various literacy activities and ended with drama presentations.

Recorder Club

Recorder Club is back on Wednesday 17 th March. All participants are required to bring a recorder to the club.

Breakfast/After-School Club

This facility is available from 8am – 5.45pm

Sickness

There seems to be another bout of sickness going around. Please continue to encourage the children with their hygiene routine. (Hand gel is useful.)

Ballathon

Our mini golf results were:

Third Place : Alan, Jazmin & Tamara

Second Place : Laurent & Troy

First Place : Beny & Sharnae

New families

We have two potential families wishing to join the school, subject to the organization of transport. One is from the Borehamwood area and the other is from Luton. Please let us know if you can assist and we can put you in touch with the individuals, to discuss costs etc…

We appreciate your support in helping us to make our school available to a wider catchment area. As our numbers continue to increase, we know that the benefits will be felt by all.

Music CDs

Last year, the school produced a music CD. We have a few more available at £2 for anyone who would like to purchase a copy.

Cross Country - Wednesday 10 th March

We are proud of all our runners and the fact that everyone was able to finish. The race categories were Y 3/4 Girls, Y3/4 Boys, Y5/6 Girls and Y 5/6 Boys. The results were as follows:

Third Place Jia Y3, Jasper Y4 Maleah Y6, Paul Y6

Second Place Sarah Y4, Troy Y4 Sharnae Y6, Laurent Y6

First Place Miriam Y4, Lemuel Y3 Abigail Y6, Elliot Y6

In addition, we are pleased to announce that three records were broken by the following children: Lemuel Y3, Abigal Y6 and Elliot Y6.

International Evening – Thursday 25 th March

Parents please note the following change: we are reverting to the traditional concert time of 7pm. Doors will open at 6.30pm (which will also be the time that the children need to arrive at school). Please contact the HSA if you are able to assist with the food or if you have a recipe to donate.

Chess Club

Our Chess Club children played against the Secondary School Chess Club this week and they had a fun session and enjoyed playing against opponents. The clubs will play each other again in the coming weeks.

Ingathering Initiative

Two pupils would like to raise funds for the ‘ingathering’ programme and have asked if they may sell some items on Friday (12 th and 19 th) after school. Please plan to support Luke and Sarah with their sale of popcorn etc... These will be available after school for pupils and parents.

Nursery Parents

It is that time of year when we ask Nursery parents to think about their little one’s progression from Nursery to Reception. Priority of place is given to the children from our Nursery, but we do ask that parents fill in the necessary form (already distributed) and return it to the school by Thursday 18 th March.

Cooking with Schools

Tank you for your continued support. The tokens can be registered at www.cookingwithschools.com , or given to Miss Harris.

HSA Replacement Committee Member

A vacancy has arisen on the HSA Committee. Anyone interested in taking up this position is asked to give their name to the HSA via the Office.

Non-Uniform Birthdays

The HSA would like to extend their non-uniform fundraising days to include Birthdays. Individuals who would like to wear their own clothes in to school on their Birthday can obtain a form from the Office. This needs to be filled in by the parents and returned to school with a £2 contribution. The teacher will need to approve the request taking into account school trips, photograph days etc…

Next HSA Meeting

Scheduled for Tuesday 30 th March.

Oxford Reading Tree

The Book People are making an offer available to parents - the Oxford Reading Tree Read at Home series. The complete set from learning to read to becoming an avid reader is available. You can purchase the 30 books for £15, whereas the normal price would be £123.69. Please check their website if you would like to get an idea of the titles in the series.

Health Promotion Strategy

Discussions have been taking place regarding a health promotion at our school and we are pleased to have the opportunity to be able to work with Angelette Muller (Msc PGDip) in the development of a health strategy. Angelette is a nutritionist and she will be working alongside teachers between the months of April and June, delivering healthy eating lessons across the curriculum. Teachers will also receive training and workshops will be available for parents to attend on subjects such as ‘packing a healthy lunch box’ and ‘food for moods’; the latter will deal specifically with the link between behaviour and food. Angelette is volunteering the majority of her time and skills to this project, but there will be a small charge for the parent workshops. We will keep you posted as to when these will run and you will get the opportunity to sign up, if you think they will be beneficial to you.

Junior Retreat

This will take place 23 rd – 24 th June. Cabins have been booked, meals are being catered and there will be some exciting activities to take part in. Signing up sheets will be available shortly.

Internet Safety

A good website to visit with your children is www.thinkuknow.co.uk

Choir

The Junior Choir has been invited to sing at the ‘Voices of Hope’ charity concert. This event will take place at Stanborough Park SDA Church (609 St Alban’s Road) on Saturday 27 th March at 7pm. This is a fundraising event and it promises to be a wonderful evening. We encourage you to come along and bring your friends and family with you.

And finally, … My teacher is sweet and she loves frogs. We call her the frog lady and she is the one that I love best. She also looks like my grandmother. (Hugs for teachers)

Regards and blessings
